Virtually unknown 10 years ago, the Circular Economy today enjoys universal support in both the policy and corporate worlds. Turning wastes into valuable resources through recycling is key to the transition to a Circular Economy. And yet, in practice, recycling still encounters significant obstacles. Exploring these and identifying ways to remove them, particularly in developing countries, was the objective of a conference organized by UNIDO and the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) in November 2018. Both policy makers and industry representatives shared their insights. To launch the discussion, Katharina Kummer Peiry of Kummer EcoConsult presented an overview of barriers to recycling and possible interventions by governments and industry. The findings of the conference are expected to assist UNIDO in its project work in the relevant areas.
